My association with purebred dogs began when I was about 4 years old and my parents bought me a golden Cocker Spaniel, and later an Australian Terrier.  It was not until I went flatting that I got my first Japanese Chin, and not long after, a lovely silver and white Shih Tzu.  I had seen a picture of a Shih Tzu and contacted one of the only breeders in New Zealand  at the time and had given up getting a puppy when a few years later, the breeder rung to say there was one available.    He was my and my late mother’s introduction to this charming and endearing breed.

Over the years, we have been very successful with our dogs in the show ring, including Best in Show winners, in Japanese Chin and Shih Tzu in both New Zealand and Australia.

In Shih Tzus, Aust/NZ Ch Flim Flam Man of Kino was a Best in Show winner All Breeds as well as Best in Show at the Melbourne Speciality Show and Best in Show at the NSW Speciality Show where his young 6 month old son was Best Puppy in Show.   Flim Flam is found in the pedigree of many of today’s top winners.

Aust/NZ Ch Kino Talk of the Town (sired by Flim Flam) was a multi Best of Group and In Show winner both in New Zealand and Australia and at one of her last shows was Runner Up Best of Group (Group 2) at the New Zealand National Dog Show.

NZ Ch Kino Double Trouble, Ch Kino Bea Rolling River and Ch Bronze Hero of Kino who sired 7 champions were all very important sires in our Shih Tzu breeding programme at Kino.   Our Shih Tzu bitches were equally as important with Ch Bea Winner of Kino the dam of 6 champions, Ch Fang-Tas-Tic of Kino producing 5 champions and most of the bitches retained by Kino producing champions in their litters.

Some of our early breeding was very successful as well with Fang-tas-tic of Kino and  Kino Sum Wun Spectacular both winning the New Zealand National Dog Show All Breeds Baby Puppy Sweepstakes;  Ch Te Shan Su of Kino winning Puppy Group at the Nationals and Runner Up to Puppy of the Year all Breeds.

Although we are not currently breeding or showing Shih Tzu they will remain in our hearts forever.

Kino Kennels are also well known for their beautiful Japanese Chin and we are currently campaigning a couple of In Show and Group winning youngsters and hope to have some Kino babies in the ring this year.

We have the honour of having New Zealand’s first (and to date, only) All Breeds Best in Show winning Japanese Chin,  Aust/NZ Ch Koto-Chin Tobiyashi.   He was also a multi Best of Group and Multi In Show winner.   His sire, Multi Group winning Ch Koto-Chin Mikasa also lived with us and both he and his son are in the pedigrees of a great many of today’s dogs.  Mikasa having sired 6 Champions and Tobiyashi 5 champions.

One of our very successful Japanese Chin youngsters, bred by us, was Kama-Nari who was the winner of the NZ National Baby Sweepstakes at just over 3 months of age under the world renowned Joe Braddon of Britain and went on to be a Multi In Show winner.

Our current show team, have finished 1st, 2nd and 3rd Rising Star Japanese Chin for 2018, are all featured in the top Toy list for New Zealand at  5th, 7th and 22nd and are all In Show and Multi Group winners.

Kino Kennels have also bred or owned Maltese, Papillion, Pomeranian and Pekingese.  In total, we have bred and/or owned over 65 Champions, most owner/handled.
